Our country was founded on freedom.  From the earliest immigrants of the Hill family in 1642, to the youngest descendants fighting in the Persian Gulf today, all of us have realized one thing.  From time to time, we are all called upon to valiantly defend that which is our birthright: Our Freedom.  It is the one ideal, the one motivation, that remains constant and unchanging, although the events of the day evolve according to the passing of time.
Robert and Mary Hill arrived here in 1642, during the reign of Charles 1st. in the midst of the English civil war - Cavaliers and Roundheads. Catholics vs. "Heretics" (Protestants). Perhaps that is why Robert and Mary Hill left. All theatres in England closed by order of the Puritans. Income and property tax introduced! Rembrandt was painting. Monteverdi was composing. Isaac Newton was born. Tasmania & New Zealand discovered. Montreal, Canada founded.

Events of the present day are no less world-changing: the religion of Islam struggling to rise to dominance amid the corrupt and weakened religions of "Unbelievers", a zealous few waging what they perceive to be a war against extinction in the face of Christianity.  Catholic priests in disgrace. Terror attacks from unseen enemies.  A country whose dictator vows that the son will never finish what the father began, even as he prepares for battle. Corporate scandals and abuse of public trust.  Hollywood rules.  "The King" still rocks, 25 years after his death.  Barry Bonds hits 600 home runs.  Though the events of the day may seem to change from generation to generation, our hopes, dreams, motivations and desires are all the same.  In the end, when the Winds of Change test our security and threaten our way of life, it
ultimately boils down to what we came here for in the first place: the right to protest against what is wrong and corrupt, and the right to  fight for freedom and the right "To worship according to the dictates of one's own conscience."

It is what Robert and Mary Hill came here for.  It is what their sons, and the sons of their sons--from Richard Hill, who fought in the Revolutionary War, to the Hills who defied the British in the War of 1812, those who fought brother against brother in the Civil War, Monroe Hill who fell in WWI, Arthur Lee who fought in Europe and returned home a hero, Eldoras "Dody" Hill who was lost at sea in WWII, Rondall Hill who fought and lost his soul in Vietnam to return home changed and forever haunted--have fought to protect and keep.  The Hills have always been willing to fight for what they believe in, no matter the cost.

These pages are for them.                                                                                       --Pam Harrison, Vine Grove, KY 7/18/2002
